How long is the body kept at the Coroner's office? Normally we try to release the decedent to a funeral home within two to three days. Depending on the circumstances of the death, and confirming identification, sometimes it is necessary to keep the remains longer.

Pathologists can do autopsies on bodies any time after death. However, the sooner, the better. After 24 hours, organs and other body tissues start to deteriorate, which makes it more difficult to perform certain tests and assess their accuracy.
